(February 2014)

AMCAL, Foundation for Affordable Housing & A Community of Friends will Celebrate the Ribbon Cutting on February 24th at 2:45pm
SANTA ANA, Calif. February 18, 2014

AMCAL Multi-Housing, one of California’s leading builders of workforce and affordable housing, along with A Community of Friends (ACOF) and Foundation for Affordable Housing, has announced the successful full occupancy of the groundbreaking special needs community of Vista Del Rio in Santa Ana. The development of Vista Del Rio serves as a collaboration to further expand affordable housing in communities that are underserved.

The new community includes 41-units, both one and two bedroom, that will provide high quality affordable housing for persons with physical and developmental disabilities and includes on-site complimentary services and modern amenities.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with A Community of Friends and the Foundation for Affordable Housing to design housing and provide services that will contribute great support and positively impact the lives of our tenants with disabilities,” said Percival Vaz, CEO of AMCAL Multi-Housing.

Complimentary social services will be provided for tenants by A Community of Friends and will include programs designed to increase or maintain the independence of tenants with disabilities, such as independent/support living training and vocational services.

“A Community of Friends is excited to expand our housing expertise to Vista Del Rio, a new housing development focused on adults with developmental disabilities. We believe an affordable home is essential to allow people with special needs to not only build healthy, independent lives but to thrive,” said Dora Leong Gallo, Chief Executive Officer of A Community of Friends.

To provide the most convenient living environment for tenants, many areas of Vista Del Rio are handicap accessible. Amenities include a large community room with a kitchen, classrooms, courtyard with fountain and meditation garden. Vista Del Rio is also located adjacent to an attractive golf course, bicycle trails, an OCTA bus line, park, UCI Medical Center, an open air shopping mall, and a grocery market to serve the needs of tenants.

Construction is two levels of Type V with 52 spaces of surface parking. The design, completed by architects KTGY Group, is traditional Craftsman, to compliment the surrounding area in this historic section of Santa Ana.

“This represents a seven-year labor of love that is finally moving from dream to reality. We are tremendously excited to take this next step, and we are grateful for all of those who so generously participated in giving Vista Del Rio life, said Deborrah Willard, President of the Foundation for Affordable Housing. “It will be a blessing to its neighborhood and to the future residents who will call it home.”

The ribbon cutting will take place February 24th at 2:45pm. Vista del Rio is located at 1600 W. Memory Lane, Santa Ana CA

An allocation of $6.4 million in 9% low-income housing tax credits was awarded in 2011. The city funded $5 million via Redevelopment Agency and HOME funds. Vista Del Rio was built to exceed Title 24 energy standards and to LEED Silver certified standards.

Vista Del Rio is AMCAL’s third development in Orange County. The Royale family apartments opened in Westminster in 2009, and Avenida Villas opened earlier this year in unincorporated Anaheim. Alegre, a new affordable family apartment development in Irvine will begin construction this year in partnership with the Irvine Community Land Trust.
