Casa de Angeles family apartments, South Los Angeles - Completion in 2008
AMCAL has re-developed many brownfields and underutilized urban sites throughout California. The most prominent is the “Avenue 26 Master Plan,” a 10-acre site that was formerly used as a furniture factory and cement/brick kiln. Extensive remediation was required, and four new housing developments with 534 units were constructed next to the new Gold Line light-rail station. Three developments were affordable apartments, and one development, Puerta del Sol, was a mixed-use condominium with live-work and retail at the street level. It was honored with the Multifamily Executive “Editors Choice – Project of the Year” in 2007.

Local Hiring: Jobs in Your Neighborhood
AMCAL has partnered with the local community on several apartments in Los Angeles. At the Casa de Angeles apartments, AMCAL partnered with YouthBuild to give youths from south Los Angeles training in construction. The Watts Labor Action Committee and Maxine Waters Employment Preparation Center were also partners in the program, which prepares youths to gain construction certifications, which can lead to future jobs.

AMCAL actively solicits feedback from neighbors in order to build better developments in communities throughout the state. By partnering with neighbors and explaining the benefits of affordable housing in the community, a consensus can be built that benefits residents of all income levels.
During construction, which results in temporary increases in noise and traffic, neighbors are given updates on the building status and the direct phone number for the Director of Construction for any complaints. Neighbors are encouraged to contact AMCAL or city officials if issues arise, and the company staff is quick
